Microsoft Expands Snapdragon X2 Lineup with Refreshed 12-Inch Surface Pro and 13-Inch Surface Laptop

Microsoft has announced the upcoming release of refreshed versions of its smaller Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models, bringing Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon X2 Plus processors to the more compact form factors. Following the initial rollout of Snapdragon X2 upgrades to the larger Surface machines back in June, Microsoft used the Snapdragon Summit to confirm that the smaller variants will officially arrive on store shelves on October 13, with a starting price of $1,149.

The upcoming hardware refresh targets users who prefer portable productivity devices without sacrificing performance. The 12-inch Surface Pro is receiving a comprehensive internal and external update, anchored by the inclusion of the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip. According to Microsoft, the refreshed tablet also boasts a display that is 25 percent brighter than its predecessor, alongside a battery that delivers a notable 30 percent increase in efficiency.

One of the most notable additions to the smaller Surface Pro lineup is an optional 5G model. Microsoft noted that cellular connectivity was one of the most heavily requested features from consumers and enterprise clients alike. In a significant shift from previous configurations, Microsoft has also streamlined the memory options. All models of the refreshed 12-inch Surface Pro now come equipped with either 16GB or 24GB of RAM, effectively eliminating the entry-level 8GB option that was available on the previous generation. Storage configurations remain tied to solid-state drives with either 256GB or 512GB of capacity.

Aside from the upgraded internals, display enhancements, and connectivity options, the tablet retains the familiar physical design of its predecessors. However, the performance and specification bumps come with a higher price tag. The base model of the refreshed 12-inch Surface Pro will start at $1,149. This represents a $300 jump compared to the entry-level price point of older iterations, a change that follows broader price adjustments across Microsoft’s entire hardware lineup earlier in the year. Even when making a direct comparison between equivalent configurations—such as the 16GB RAM and 256GB storage model—buyers will still face a $100 price increase over previous generations.

A similar design and pricing strategy has been applied to the smaller traditional laptop form factor. The Surface Laptop 13-inch adopts the same generational formula, integrating the Snapdragon X2 Plus architecture while dropping the legacy 8GB RAM tier. The 13-inch laptop will start at $1,199, which is a modest $50 increase over the equivalent entry price of the previous generation. Like its tablet counterpart, the 13-inch Surface Laptop benefits from a noticeably brighter display panel and the substantial efficiency gains provided by the new processor architecture, though the chassis and overall design remain nearly identical to last year’s models.

In tandem with the hardware refreshes for the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, Microsoft is expanding its peripheral ecosystem with the introduction of a new Surface Mouse. Priced at $79.99 and slated for release on October 13 alongside the new computers, the mouse features advanced haptic feedback capabilities and a dedicated, customizable Copilot button designed to integrate smoothly with Microsoft’s artificial intelligence tools within Windows.

Furthermore, both the new Surface hardware releases and existing compatible devices will benefit from the introduction of "Microsoft Ink Canvas," a newly developed application tailored to enhance digital inking, sketching, and note-taking experiences across Surface displays. As Microsoft continues to transition its portfolio toward advanced ARM-based processors and deeply integrated AI workflows, the October 13 release date marks the next phase in the company’s hardware strategy for mobile professionals and creative users.
