Gemini app replacing Gems with skills in November

Users visiting the online Gems manager have begun encountering a prominent notice at the top of the interface informing them of the upcoming change. According to the notification displayed on the platform, Gems will officially become skills starting November 17, 2026. The platform reassures existing users that they will continue to have full access to their created Gems until the automated migration process takes place later in the year, at which point Google will begin automatically converting them into the new skills format.

The concept of custom AI personas and targeted instructions is not entirely new to the ecosystem. Google first introduced skills alongside the rollout of Gemini Spark, establishing a system that serves the same core purpose as Gems at a high level. Both features are designed to allow individuals to provide Gemini with specific, custom instructions tailored to particular workflows, writing styles, creative projects, or technical tasks.

Despite their similar underlying functions, the two systems approach user interaction and capability deployment differently. Traditional Gems allowed users to go a step further by establishing default tools, such as the ability to automatically trigger image creation features or interface with Canvas, while also incorporating specific reference files to provide ongoing context for conversations. Additionally, individual Gems could be easily shared with other users via direct links.

Skills, however, introduce a more streamlined and integrated method of invocation within the primary conversational interface. Rather than requiring a user to navigate away from the main chat window, open a side panel, scroll down to find the "My Gems" section, and select a preferred configuration, skills are designed to be invoked directly within the prompt box. By simply typing a slash character, users can bring up and apply skills seamlessly. Furthermore, the new architecture allows multiple skills to be utilized simultaneously within the same prompt interaction, offering a broader and more flexible level of access during complex tasks.

While the notice has begun appearing for users across the platform, the transition rollout appears to have arrived slightly ahead of schedule. At this early stage, certain associated support elements remain incomplete. For instance, the designated "Learn more" help article and the corresponding "Create skills" buttons are not yet fully operational, indicating that the backend infrastructure and public documentation are still being finalized by Google’s engineering and support teams.

For subscribers enrolled in Google AI Pro or AI Ultra tiers, early access components are beginning to take shape. Eligible subscribers can experiment with creating new skills by switching over to the designated Gemini Spark tab within the platform. By typing a slash in the chat box, these users can test out how skills integrate directly into the main conversational experience, offering a glimpse into the future workflow that will soon become standard for the broader user base.

As the November 17, 2026 migration deadline approaches, Google is expected to roll out fully functioning documentation and interface elements to ensure a smooth transition for creators and everyday users who rely on custom Gemini configurations for their productivity and creative projects.
