OpenAI is preparing to roll out a new advertising format for ChatGPT that will display images of sponsored products and services directly on user screens. According to an announcement made by the artificial intelligence company on Monday, these visual advertisements will initially make their debut when users generate images through the chatbot. The upcoming pilot program is scheduled to begin testing in the United States later this month, marking another significant step in OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to integrate commercial monetization strategies into its rapidly growing conversational platform. This development follows OpenAI’s initial introduction of advertisements to ChatGPT, which first rolled out earlier in February. Until now, the platform’s advertising framework has been relatively modest and text-based, showing only a company’s name, its corporate logo, and a direct link to its merchandise or services within a distinct "sponsored" section positioned beneath the main chat interface. The new visual ad format will function similarly by remaining physically separated from the actual content generated by the user. OpenAI has emphasized that these promotional images will not alter, dictate, or otherwise influence the core answers and outputs that ChatGPT provides during a conversation. Furthermore, users who subscribe to ChatGPT’s premium tiers—including the Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans—will be entirely exempt from seeing these advertisements. The company’s stated goal is to deliberately keep sponsored content away from emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable conversational contexts. During this initial phase, OpenAI is testing the new visual ad format with a carefully selected, initial group of advertisers. The organization has also indicated that it intends to continue experimenting with and trying out alternative advertising formats in the future as it evaluates the effectiveness and user reception of these commercial features.
