In a major push to supercharge its national telecommunications infrastructure, AT&T has officially signed a new, multi-year procurement agreement with industry giant Corning. Valued at upwards of $3 billion, the substantial deal focuses on the large-scale purchase of advanced fiber optic cables. This financial and logistical commitment is designed to directly fuel AT&T’s ambitious, long-term strategic objective: connecting a total of 60 million homes, apartments, and business locations to high-speed fiber optic infrastructure by the year 2030.

The partnership represents a significant deepening of ties between the two companies, building upon a previously established multi-year fiber agreement signed two years ago. That earlier contract, valued at $1 billion, laid the crucial groundwork for AT&T’s accelerated network rollout. The telecommunications provider’s relationship with Corning extends even further into domestic manufacturing; notably, AT&T served as a core investor in Corning’s dedicated cable manufacturing facility located in Arizona back in 2022, a strategic move that helped secure localized supply chains amid broader global manufacturing fluctuations.

AT&T is buying $3 billion worth of fibre optic cables from Corning

The newly minted $3 billion investment arrives at a time of remarkable momentum for AT&T’s broadband division. The carrier recently achieved a major operational milestone, successfully passing 30 million customer locations with its advanced fiber network as of June of this year. Reaching this halfway point to the ultimate 2030 goal occurred a full six months ahead of the company’s initial deployment schedule, demonstrating a high degree of execution efficiency from its engineering and deployment teams.

This rapid infrastructure expansion is directly translating into commercial growth and strong financial reporting. In its most recent earnings report covering the second quarter of the year, AT&T revealed a robust influx of new broadband customers. The company successfully added 646,000 total consumer and business internet net subscribers during the quarter. Out of that impressive total, 367,000 customers specifically signed up for fiber optic internet services. According to company data, this performance marked a record-breaking quarter for the combined addition of both fiber and fixed wireless subscribers, underscoring the escalating consumer and corporate demand for high-capacity, reliable internet connectivity in an increasingly digital economy.

The continuous deployment of fiber optic lines remains a cornerstone of modern telecommunications strategy. As households and businesses consume unprecedented volumes of data driven by remote work, cloud computing, high-definition streaming, and emerging technologies, legacy copper infrastructure has increasingly proven insufficient to handle modern bandwidth demands. By securing a guaranteed, multi-year supply of high-grade fiber optic cables through its expanded partnership with Corning, AT&T is positioning itself to maintain a steady deployment pace over the remainder of the decade. This ensures that the telecommunications provider can continue scaling its fiber footprint without facing the supply chain bottlenecks that have historically plagued large-scale infrastructure projects across the tech and telecom sectors.
