Meta used its annual Meta Connect showcase to deliver a sweeping update to its hardware and artificial intelligence roadmap, introducing a heavily diversified slate of wearables designed to bridge the gap between virtual reality, everyday augmented audio, and ambient computing. Headlining the announcements was an entirely new category of lightweight virtual reality eyewear, accompanied by privacy-focused audio glasses, major generation updates to its flagship smart eyewear, international expansions, and a newly teased standalone AI gadget.

The undisputed star of the annual developer event was the newly introduced Meta VR Glasses. Breaking away from the bulky, strap-heavy design paradigm that has historically dominated the virtual reality landscape, Meta’s latest flagship offering packs full-fledged virtual reality technology into a sleek form factor resembling traditional smart glasses. According to the company, the device weighs a mere 100 grams, making it roughly five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3.

To achieve this featherweight profile on the face, Meta adopted a tethered architecture similar to Google’s Project Aura. The glasses are physically connected via a cord to a pocket-sized puck that houses the heavy-duty computing hardware, battery, and storage infrastructure. Under the hood, the puck runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, accompanied by 12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Visuals are powered by a 5K micro OLED "Infinite Display," delivering an impressive 2412 by 2288 pixels per eye alongside a high refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Scheduled to launch in the spring of 2027 with a price tag of $1,299, the Meta VR Glasses occupy a unique middle ground in the market. They are positioned as significantly more expensive than the Meta Ray-Ban Display, yet notably more affordable than Apple’s Vision Pro, while offering a comparable suite of productivity and entertainment capabilities. Users will be able to tether the glasses to a Mac or Windows laptop to serve as a virtual external display, complete with support for a virtual surface keyboard and touchpad.

Beyond enterprise and productivity tasks, the Meta VR Glasses grant users full access to the existing Meta Quest catalog of applications and games, alongside native support for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Positioning the device as a media powerhouse, Meta highlighted that it is the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device ever produced. Users can leverage the high-resolution displays to stream immersive live sports and 3D movies. Furthermore, the hardware introduces a sophisticated "hologram" feature, which generates a photorealistic digital avatar of the user’s face for video calls while wearing the glasses—a capability drawing direct comparisons to the persona features found on Apple’s high-end spatial computing headset.

Meta is launching camera-free smart glasses

In a strategic shift addressing growing consumer demands for privacy and discretion, Meta also unveiled a brand-new line of screen-free smart glasses that intentionally omit built-in cameras. The new Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses retain core smart features, allowing users to listen to music, take phone calls, and interact with an integrated AI assistant, but completely lack the hardware required to capture photographs or record video. This design choice directly targets the privacy and harassment concerns that have occasionally shadowed Meta’s camera-equipped eyewear lines.

Meta emphasized that these audio-only frames represent its lightest and slimmest AI glasses to date, tipping the scales at just 43 grams. Despite their diminutive size, the glasses deliver up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge, which extends to an impressive 48 hours when using the accompanying charging case. The Ray-Ban Meta Audio collection is set to hit shelves on October 13th, starting at $349 and offering a diverse selection of 23 different color and lens combinations to suit various aesthetic preferences.

Refreshed Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 arrive with battery and design upgrades

For consumers who still desire camera functionality, Meta announced a comprehensive refresh of its flagship eyewear line with the arrival of the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, starting at $449. The third-generation glasses improve upon their predecessors by offering up to nine hours of continuous battery life, representing a one-hour gain over the previous iteration.

The Gen 3 frames introduce a newly customizable action button designed to provide instant, frictionless access to Meta AI. Audio capture and voice recognition have also seen significant enhancements through a newly engineered six-microphone array, which Meta claims is capable of cutting out more than 90 percent of ambient background noise. Architecturally, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 boasts a slimmer profile than the Gen 2, arriving in 27 distinct color and lens configurations, including newly introduced Zena and Aviator frame styles. Notably, the hardware retains the signature built-in LED indicator light designed to signal when the camera is actively recording, a feature that was the focal point of a recent privacy firmware fix rolled out by the company.

Meta is also scaling the reach of its recently introduced Muse AI assistant, confirming plans to integrate the technology directly into its smart glasses ecosystem. Once deployed, the Muse agent will be equipped to assist users with personalized fitness coaching, meal logging, appointment scheduling, and contextual shopping tasks, such as helping users purchase products they spot in the real world. Additional features for the AI assistant include interactive video calls featuring a customizable live avatar, alongside dedicated email addresses assigned to individual Muse agents to help them autonomously complete tasks and communicate with users.

Closing out the Meta Connect showcase, CEO Mark Zuckerberg provided a brief teaser for one final hardware experiment: the Muse Charm. Described as a small, standalone AI gadget housing the Muse agent with an aesthetic reminiscent of a supersized Tamagotchi, the device is slated to ship in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season, with further specifications to be revealed by the company soon.
