Omnivision has announced the OAX7700, an ultra-low-power application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to serve as an always-on vision AI companion processor for modern vehicle security systems. Supporting sensor resolutions of up to 720p, the new ASIC aims to fundamentally change how cars monitor their surroundings while parked or left unattended. By integrating an advanced neural processing unit (NPU) directly into the companion processor, Omnivision is enabling system designers to develop and deploy custom algorithms capable of sophisticated tasks such as human presence detection, object classification, and precise distance measurement at the network edge.

The introduction of the OAX7700 addresses a longstanding challenge in automotive design: balancing the need for continuous, vigilant security monitoring against the strict power consumption limits of a vehicle’s electrical architecture. Traditional exterior camera solutions, including surround-view setups and various edge-based parking surveillance systems, often require substantial power to remain active, quickly draining the vehicle’s battery if left running continuously. The OAX7700 tackles this hurdle by offering an ultra-low-power operating profile that allows exterior cameras to stay on guard around the clock without compromising battery integrity.

In its always-on operational mode, the camera continuously surveys the vehicle’s environment while consuming minimal power. The ASIC remains in this highly efficient state until a specific event or motion signature triggers it to wake up and transition into normal operating mode. Crucially, the system is engineered to maintain a memory buffer, recording up to 10 seconds of pre-roll video leading up to the trigger event. Once the system shifts to normal mode, the vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU) analyzes this pre-roll footage to rigorously validate the nature of the trigger before taking action, such as sounding an alarm or sending an alert to the owner.

This intelligent validation process provides a major operational advantage by drastically reducing false alarms. Standard motion-detection systems frequently trigger false positives caused by harmless environmental factors, such as swaying branches, high winds, passing birds, or other non-threatening ambient motion. By utilizing the OAX7700’s integrated NPU and analyzing pre-roll video through the ECU, the security system can accurately distinguish between a harmless passing shadow and a genuine security threat, ensuring that alarms are only activated when an actual risk is detected.

According to performance data released by Omnivision, parking surveillance systems equipped with the new OAX7700 ASIC achieve remarkable power savings, consuming up to 97% less power compared to existing market solutions. This dramatic reduction in energy consumption is paired with architectural benefits for the vehicle’s broader computing ecosystem. By handling local vision processing and initial threat assessment at the edge, the ASIC significantly lessens the processing burden traditionally placed on the vehicle’s central compute platform. This distributed approach enables much faster, more efficient decision-making locally, freeing up central computing resources for other critical automotive functions.

The hardware implementation of the OAX7700 is designed to streamline integration for tier-one suppliers and original equipment manufacturers looking to upgrade existing exterior camera configurations. The compact ASIC integrates stacked PSRAM and flash memory directly within its 60-pin ball grid array (BGA) package, minimizing the required footprint on printed circuit boards and simplifying hardware layouts. This high level of integration makes the processor an ideal drop-in upgrade or companion chip for current surround-view networks and intelligent parking surveillance architectures.

Industry interest in edge artificial intelligence and low-power automotive semiconductors continues to grow as consumers demand advanced safety and security features that operate reliably even when the vehicle engine is turned off. With the OAX7700, Omnivision is targeting this expanding market segment by providing a dedicated, intelligent vision processor that bridges the gap between continuous monitoring and energy efficiency.

Engineering samples of the OAX7700 ASIC are currently available for device manufacturers and system developers looking to begin prototyping and testing custom vision algorithms. Full volume production for the new chip is officially scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2027, paving the way for next-generation, AI-enabled vehicle security systems to enter the commercial automotive market.
