OpenAI is preparing to significantly expand its advertising strategy within ChatGPT, just months after first introducing sponsored content to the platform. Having initially rolled out simple, text-based ads positioned between chat messages for free and Go tier users back in February, the artificial intelligence leader is now unveiling a much more prominent format. The company has announced the upcoming launch of what it describes as visual ads, bringing larger image-based promotions directly into the user experience.

According to OpenAI, these new visual advertisements will feature significantly larger graphics compared to their text-based predecessors. Advertisers will have the option to display several thumbnail images or a single screen-width image, offering a much more striking visual presence. However, users will not see these changes immediately, as OpenAI plans to introduce the new format later this month. The initial rollout will begin with a controlled testing period, during which visual ads will exclusively appear when a user actively generates images using ChatGPT.

To maintain transparency and preserve the user experience, OpenAI has outlined several operational boundaries for the new format. The visual ads will be presented completely separately from the actual AI-generated images that the user requested. Furthermore, every sponsored placement will be clearly marked as an ad so that users can instantly distinguish between organic AI output and commercial content. In addition to these visual distinctions, OpenAI has explicitly stated that the presence or placement of these ads will have absolute zero influence over the substance, tone, or direction of the artificial intelligence’s responses.

Alongside the introduction of visual placements, the company is implementing strict safety measures to protect users during sensitive interactions. OpenAI has established robust guardrails designed to prevent advertisements from appearing within chat threads that involve emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts. To ensure that these safeguards remain effective over time, the platform will rely on a combination of continuous automated checks and rigorous human oversight to monitor ad delivery in real time.

While the company’s formal press announcements do not explicitly detail user tier limitations for this specific test, the new visual ad format is presumably restricted to free and Go tier ChatGPT users, mirroring the initial rollout framework established earlier this year. Paying subscribers on higher tiers are expected to remain exempt from sponsored content as part of the value proposition of their subscriptions.

To streamline the adoption process for brands and agencies, OpenAI has been actively working on integrating its proprietary advertising solutions with traditional, established advertising networks. This integration is intended to simplify how corporate clients buy, manage, and scale campaigns across the ecosystem. Additionally, the company has developed a suite of measurement tools designed to help advertisers quantify the impact and performance of their campaigns within the AI-native environment.

The expansion of OpenAI’s commercial ecosystem arrives as the platform achieves staggering user scale. During the announcements, the company revealed that ChatGPT has reached an astonishing 1.2 billion weekly active users. Backed by this massive user base, OpenAI has positioned itself as the world’s largest AI-native consumer platform. While traditional technology giants like Google boast an even wider overall reach through their legacy search engines and vast operating systems, OpenAI maintains a distinct identity as an AI-native ecosystem, separating itself from competitors that merely layer AI summaries on top of traditional web infrastructure. As the company prepares to deploy visual ads later this month, the tech industry will be watching closely to see how consumers and advertisers adapt to this next phase of conversational artificial intelligence monetization.
