Samsung’s aggressive software support schedule continues to gather momentum as the company brings its latest major operating system update to an even broader ecosystem of premium devices. Following a structured rollout pattern that began earlier in the autumn season, the technology giant has officially commenced the distribution of the stable One UI 9 update—built upon the foundation of Android 17—to the Galaxy S24 lineup of smartphones, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 foldable devices.

The latest phase of this software deployment follows a carefully managed timeline that Samsung has steadily executed over the past two months. The journey of One UI 9 initially began back in July when the software made its commercial debut on Samsung’s then-newest generation of foldables, specifically the Galaxy Z Fold8, the Fold8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip8. Because these cutting-edge devices launched with the software pre-installed, owners of older flagship hardware have had to exercise patience while waiting for the operating system to be optimized, tested, and adapted for their specific processing architectures and hardware configurations.

That wait has gradually come to an end for a massive wave of users. Samsung’s deployment strategy kicked into high gear in mid-September, when the company officially released the One UI 9 update based on Android 17 for the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra. After ensuring that the software performed reliably on its latest standard slab flagships, Samsung expanded the reach of the update toward the end of last month. That wave brought the stable operating system to the previous-generation Galaxy S25 series, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 foldables. Now, keeping to that consistent cadence, the South Korean manufacturer has turned its attention to the 2024 flagship generation, delivering the much-anticipated software package to the Galaxy S24 handsets, the Galaxy Z Fold6, and the Galaxy Z Flip6.

True to Samsung’s customary geographical rollout strategy, the update is currently making its initial appearance in South Korea, the company’s home country. While this localized launch allows engineers to monitor the live deployment closely and catch any unforeseen bugs or server bottlenecks in real time, it is standard industry practice for these updates to scale rapidly. The stable firmware will undoubtedly reach more international markets and carrier networks in the coming days and weeks, expanding across North America, Europe, Asia, and other key regions.

For users eagerly awaiting the software, the size of the download varies significantly depending on their current software channel and whether they participated in the preliminary testing phases. For owners of a Galaxy S24 series smartphone who were previously enrolled in the beta testing program, the update package is relatively modest, weighing in at approximately 500MB. This smaller file size assumes the user has already been testing precursor builds of the software. However, for everyday users who are jumping straight from the previous public firmware—specifically One UI 8.5—to the new Android 17-powered operating system, the download is considerably larger, requiring roughly 3.8GB of free space on the device and a stable Wi-Fi connection to download efficiently.

A similar storage dynamic applies to owners of the foldable lineup. For the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Galaxy Z Flip6, the update file size sits at approximately 408MB for those transitioning directly from the beta program. For users updating their foldables straight from the older One UI 8.5 software, the download package expands to about 3.5GB. Given the substantial size of the full public update for both slab and foldable devices, users are generally advised to back up critical data, ensure their batteries are sufficiently charged, and connect to an unmetered Wi-Fi network before initiating the installation process.

Although it has taken several months for the software to cascade down from the July launch of the Z Fold8 series to these older flagship models, the ball is finally rolling across the broader ecosystem. As the rollout widens beyond South Korea and reaches international shores, millions of users with Galaxy S24, Z Fold6, and Z Flip6 devices will soon be able to experience the latest interface refinements, performance optimizations, and security enhancements that define Samsung’s latest software generation.
