Mental health charity Safe In Our World has officially launched "Four Billion Gamers," a brand-new global campaign calling on video game companies worldwide to make mental health support much easier for players to find within their products and platforms.

The significant initiative was officially unveiled just ahead of World Mental Health Day, arriving at a poignant milestone—seven years after the charity was first established to advocate for psychological well-being within the interactive entertainment sector. The launch also coincides with a monumental demographic projection: the global gaming audience is forecast to surge past the four billion mark in the coming years.

As the digital entertainment landscape expands to encompass nearly half of the world’s population, Safe In Our World has pointed out that the industry is navigating a complex and often turbulent period. The charity noted that widespread industry layoffs, studio closures, and pervasive career uncertainty have created acute new pressures for the talented professionals who design and build games, even as the overall number of active players continues to climb at an unprecedented pace.

In response to these shifting dynamics, the "Four Billion Gamers" campaign is asking developers, publishers, and platform holders to take proactive steps by integrating clear, accessible routes to trusted mental health support directly into the gaming ecosystem. According to the charity, these practical implementations could take several forms depending on the nature of the game or platform. Suggested methods include displaying a supportive message when a game initially boots up, embedding a direct link within a main menu, or providing clear signposting and resources within dedicated community spaces, forums, and multiplayer lobbies.

Reaching Players Across the Globe

At its core, the campaign is built around the fundamental belief championed by Safe In Our World that no one in the gaming community should ever feel alone with their mental health struggles. Through this initiative, the charity hopes to forge close collaborations with industry partners across the globe, sharing real-world examples of best practices and helping to develop practical, actionable guidance for development and community teams.

Over the past seven years of operation, Safe In Our World has established a robust track record of advocacy and support within the industry. The organization has successfully provided more than $450,000 in free mental health training to individuals and studios, equipping more than 400 games industry professionals with the skills needed to recognize and address mental health challenges in the workplace. Furthermore, the charity’s expansive ambassador network now includes more than 200 dedicated individuals spread across 15 countries, acting as localized advocates for well-being.

In addition to its work supporting industry workforces, the charity has extended its reach directly to consumers. Safe In Our World has helped connect half a million people with vital mental health information, practical tools, specialized training, and guidance through its central website, serving as an essential hub for gamers and developers alike.

Highlighting the profound emotional connections that players form with interactive media, Safe In Our World Charity Director Sarah Sorrell emphasized the paradox of modern digital connectivity.

"Games have an extraordinary ability to bring people together, but someone can still feel alone while playing," said Sorrell, shedding light on the isolating experiences that can sometimes occur even within massive multiplayer environments. "We want every player to know there is help and hope, and somewhere they can turn. Four Billion Gamers is an invitation to the industry to help us share that message."

As the campaign gets underway, Safe In Our World has confirmed that game developers, publishers, and major digital platforms interested in participating and learning more about how to integrate these vital support systems can now register their interest directly through the charity’s official organization channels.
