pSemi has introduced two new additions to its semiconductor portfolio with the launch of the PE566212 and PE566213 2.4-GHz silicon-on-insulator (SOI) front-end modules (FEMs). Engineered specifically to support popular short-range wireless communication standards including Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Thread, these integrated modules are designed to address common performance bottlenecks in modern Internet of Things (IoT) hardware. By combining a power amplifier, a low-noise amplifier, and an RF switch into a single, highly compact package, the company aims to simplify complex radio frequency design procedures for hardware engineers working in crowded consumer and industrial markets.

Modern IoT applications place stringent demands on designers, who must constantly balance power consumption, thermal management, physical dimensions, and communication range. Traditional discrete radio frequency designs often require numerous individual components, which can increase bill-of-materials costs, consume valuable printed circuit board real estate, and introduce potential points of failure or signal loss. The PE566212 and PE566213 mitigate these engineering hurdles by housing the essential front-end circuitry within a miniature 1.8-by-1.8-by-0.63-millimeter land grid array package. This high level of component integration not only streamlines the overall layout of the printed circuit board but also helps manufacturers accelerate their time to market for space-constrained devices.

The target applications for these new front-end modules span a broad spectrum of connected technologies. They are ideally suited for smart home ecosystems, where reliable connectivity is necessary across various rooms and through physical barriers. Wireless audio systems, wearable health and fitness trackers, and industrial sensing networks can also benefit directly from the enhanced signal integrity and extended transmission ranges provided by the modules. By augmenting the capabilities of standard system-on-chips, these components allow developers to create robust products that maintain stable communication links even in challenging radio frequency environments.

Performance capabilities and architectural advantages lie at the core of pSemi’s latest release. The new front-end modules are capable of delivering a transmit output power of up to +20 dBm, significantly boosting the signal strength of connected devices. On the receiving side, they feature a noise figure of 1.8 dB at 13 dB of gain, ensuring that faint signals can be detected and processed accurately. Additionally, the modules offer a typical bypass-path loss of just 0.8 dB, preserving signal fidelity when amplification is not required. According to pSemi, integrating these front-end modules into a design can yield five to ten times the wireless communication range achievable with a standalone system-on-chip alone, a substantial improvement for low-power wireless protocols.

Underpinning these performance metrics is pSemi’s proprietary UltraCMOS+ silicon-on-insulator process technology. Traditional high-performance radio frequency front ends have frequently relied on gallium arsenide or silicon-germanium fabrication technologies, which can present integration and manufacturing challenges. By leveraging an advanced silicon-based alternative, pSemi has engineered front-end modules that combine the performance advantages traditionally associated with compound semiconductors with the cost-efficiency, scalability, and integration benefits of mainstream silicon manufacturing. This approach enables high efficiency and linearity while maintaining a small footprint.

While both modules share a fundamental architecture optimized for the 2.4-GHz industrial, scientific, and medical frequency band, they cater to distinct protocol requirements within the Bluetooth ecosystem. The PE566212 is engineered to support Bluetooth Basic Data Rate and Bluetooth Low Energy protocols. To provide precise control over transmission power levels, it incorporates 22.5 dB of transmit digital gain control configured in fine 1.5-dB steps, allowing developers to optimize power consumption dynamically based on link quality and distance requirements.

Conversely, the PE566213 broadens its protocol support by adding compatibility with Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate at output levels up to +11.5 dBm. This module features 15 dB of transmit digital gain control implemented in 1-dB steps, offering finely tuned power management for applications that require higher data throughput alongside energy efficiency. By differentiating the feature sets of the PE566212 and PE566213, pSemi provides developers with targeted options depending on the specific communication standards and modulation schemes utilized in their end products.

The introduction of these components comes at a time when the proliferation of connected devices demands increasingly sophisticated radio frequency solutions. As consumers and industries alike come to expect seamless automation, real-time data monitoring, and prolonged battery life from their connected hardware, the underlying semiconductor technology must evolve to meet these expectations without driving up production complexity. Silicon-on-insulator advancements continue to play a crucial role in this evolution by bridging the performance gap between traditional compound semiconductors and modern highly integrated system architectures.

For design teams eager to evaluate the capabilities of the new modules in real-world scenarios, pSemi has confirmed that both the PE566212 and PE566213 front-end modules are currently available for purchase through standard distribution channels. Furthermore, comprehensive evaluation boards accompanying each model have been released to help engineers jump-start their prototyping and testing phases, enabling them to quickly measure power output, range enhancement, and thermal performance within their own application environments.
