pSemi has expanded its portfolio of radio frequency components with the introduction of the PE566212 and PE566213 2.4-GHz silicon-on-insulator (SOI) front-end modules (FEMs). Engineered specifically to support modern short-range wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Thread, these new integrated solutions aim to streamline the complex process of RF circuit design while significantly enhancing connectivity performance for resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Integrated FEMs ease 2.4-GHz RF design

Each of the newly announced modules integrates three essential RF components—a power amplifier, a low-noise amplifier, and an RF switch—into a single, highly compact package measuring just 1.8 by 1.8 by 0.63 millimeters in an LGA format. This high degree of integration is intended to reduce the overall bill of materials and minimize board space requirements, which is a critical advantage for hardware developers working within the strict physical constraints of modern connected products. Target applications span a wide array of consumer and industrial segments, including smart home automation devices, wireless audio peripherals, wearable technology, and various remote sensing systems where reliability and power efficiency are paramount.

Operating within the crowded and demanding 2.4-GHz industrial, scientific, and medical frequency band, the new FEMs deliver robust performance metrics designed to overcome the physical limitations typically associated with standalone system-on-chip solutions. According to technical specifications provided by pSemi, the modules are capable of providing a transmit output power of up to +20 dBm. Furthermore, they feature a receive noise figure of 1.8 dB coupled with 13 dB of gain, alongside a typical bypass-path loss of just 0.8 dB.

Company representatives note that the integration of these front-end modules can extend the operational wireless range of a standalone system-on-chip by a factor of five to ten, depending on the specific application environment and deployment scenario. This substantial improvement in link budget and signal propagation is achieved through the utilization of pSemi’s proprietary UltraCMOS-based SOI manufacturing process. By leveraging this advanced silicon technology, the company offers a robust, highly integrated silicon alternative to traditional gallium arsenide and silicon-germanium front-end architectures traditionally relied upon in high-performance RF engineering.

Looking closer at the individual product variants, the PE566212 is tailored to support Bluetooth Basic Data Rate and Bluetooth Low Energy protocols. It incorporates 22.5 dB of transmit digital gain control, which can be adjusted in precise 1.5-dB steps to optimize power consumption and signal integrity across varying distances. In contrast, the PE566213 broadens its operational capabilities by adding support for Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate at output levels up to +11.5 dBm. This variant offers 15 dB of transmit digital gain control adjustable in 1-dB steps, catering to applications that demand higher data throughput while maintaining strict power profiles.

The introduction of these modules addresses a persistent challenge in the design of battery-powered IoT hardware: balancing extended wireless range and reliable link quality with strict power budgets and minimal physical footprints. By consolidating multiple discrete active components into a single sub-system built on an advanced SOI platform, pSemi provides hardware engineers with a standardized building block that reduces layout complexity and shortens time-to-market cycles for new connected product introductions.

Both the PE566212 and PE566213 front-end modules, along with their corresponding evaluation boards to assist design engineers with prototyping and testing, are available now through pSemi and its authorized global distribution network.
